FAQs about Womens Health Physiotherapy

Is Womens Health Physiotherapy only for women who have just had a baby?

No. This is a common mis understanding, however Womens Health Physiotherapists are in fact here to support all women through all stages of life. Some examples include…

- Management of Chronic pain related to conditions such as endometriosis

- Management of symptoms related to menopause

- Lower back and pelvic girdle pain (from adolescents to later in life)

- Specific exercise plans and programs tailored for women eg. promoting good bone health

I am pregnant. When should I see a Womens Health Physio?

Now! It is so helpful to have a Womens Health Physio support you during your pregnancy, to help

  • Provide you with a safe exercise program

  • Help you manage any pain that may arise due to the physical and hormonal changes you are going through

  • Provide education, tips and tricks to aid your recovery in the initial pre natal phase

  • Teach you correct Pelvic floor exercises (interestingly enough there is evidence that supports that working with a Physiotherapist during pregnancy, and engaging in regular Pelvic floor exercises can both improve your birthing experience AND decrease the risk of complications post both)

How do I know if I am doing a Pelvic Floor exercise correctly?

Unfortunately… it is very hard to tell if you are. Which is why Womens Health Physiotherapists are specifically trained in being able to assess your pelvic floor and teach the correct exercises. This is often where the use of Real Time Ultrasound comes in handy… which leads us to our next FAQ

What is Real Time Ultrasound? And when is it used?

Real time Ultrasound is a technology which allows your Physio to image your muscles eg. your pelvic floor muscles, and view the on a screen in real time. It is placed over the lower stomach and can be helpful to view the coordination and strength of your various pelvic floor and deep abdominal muscles. Real time ultrasound is not just used for assessment, it also a helpful tool for the training of your deep core and pelvic floor.

It is a great tool for the management and treatment of pelvic floor related dysfunction, back pain or rehabilitating post bub!
