Juliette Moora from the Nesting Space

We chat with the lovely Juliette Moora from the Nesting Space. Find out how a Mental Health Occupational Therapist can help you or a loved one navigate the ups and downs of pregnancy and motherhood.

Please share with us a little about Nesting Space and the service you're providing?

Nesting Space is a private Mental Health Occupational therapy practice offering specialised support for women during the perinatal period, encompassing pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum years.  Our focus is on nurturing mental and emotional well-being, fostering a positive transition into motherhood.

Are you able to give us some examples of the types of clients that you support to help women understand if this might be something that would benefit them?

We support women experiencing a range of challenges, including anxiety, depression, birth trauma, adjustment difficulties, and those simply seeking additional support during this transformative time.

If someone is to come and see you for support postnatally are you able to run us through what a session might look like?

Each session will differ depending on what the person's therapy goals are but mostly we explore your matrescence and what the journey has been like for you and the unique challenges you have faced. The sessions will be a combination of validation and education around what happens to the brain, body and identity during motherhood with practical and psychological strategies on how to cope with the demands of pregnancy, postpartum and parenting. Whether you are seeing me via telehealth or a home visit a session would usually run starting with a mindfulness activity to get you grounded and present for the session!

As a new mum yourself, if you were able to go back in time and give yourself advice on how to navigate the early postpartum stage, what would you say?

Prioritise rest, accept help, and be kind to yourself.  The postpartum period is a huge adjustment, and it's important to remember that you're not alone in this experience. Stop scrolling instagram as there is so much misinformation out there and understand that only you know your baby.

What would be the difference between seeing you or seeing a psychologist?

Mental Health Occupational Therapy in the perinatal context is a combination of developmental and attachment theories, psychological and sociological therapies, and Matrescence - all considered through the occupational therapy lens. Occupational Therapists focus on occupation and being a mother is an occupation. MHOT’s have a deep understanding of the sensory system which is typically completely overwhelmed in early parenthood and is the reason for hypervigilance and overwhelm. MHOT’s will provide you with strategies to reduce your sensory overwhelm so you can cope with the demands that come with early parenthood and build strong connections with your baby.

You can get a medicare referral for your services which is great. Are you able to explain how women can access this and what this means?

All you need is to book in to see your GP and ask for a mental health care plan. Once you have this you can book in and we will take care of the rebate for you!

And now a fun one as life isn't all about work! As a fellow Northern Beaches girl, what is your go to coffee spot and go to spot for a cheeky drink?

Coffee - Split Coffee in Curl Curl

Cocktail - The Stowaway in Freshy for a Lychee Martini Baby!!
